EVALUATION

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

This module I have really improved on my Photoshop and Illustrator skills and found myself really enjoying exploring and using them both which I never normally do. I have used these skills for my final products, which has given them more of a professional finish. I think my work could have looked better as I couldn’t figure out how to use everything.

What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Research is something I also normally avoid but in this module I have found it easier as I think it was just starting that I found hard. However as I got going it became easier. I have found researching triggers of my ideas where as before I thought I always had the best Idea I could have but when researching new ideas come up.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

I think my strongest part of my work is that I have the ability to create hand drawn images. I used this skill by drawing out a lot of my images and then making them look better by live tracing them on illustrator.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

The weakness I think is most obvious is my lack of computer skills and making my work look professional. Although this module I feel that I have gain a lot of skills on a computer, I would like to improve them more though.

Another weekness is information. I feel I am not very good with words and when creating packaging I ofter avoid putting any writing on which means my product doesn’t have any information.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Start designing quicker, I did too much research and not enough designing

2. use a wider range of materials

3. make my work look more professional

4. not be afraid to do something big and creative

5. look in to creative packaging

How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance 3

Punctuality 4

Cork mats

If I had the skill to produce my mats on cork boards this is how I would like them to look.
To really do this i would have to have a finish of: matte/glossy UV, PE, PP, Melamine and it would have to be heat resistant and water proof so that hot plates and water could be places on to them.

Paper

Bubble Jet Paper!!!!

This paper gives water resistant prints and as you can see from the second picture that they have demonstrated it use with a place mat n coasters. so i have bought this paper and am going to try it out for my mats.

Mock design boards

Quiz cards

Here are two photos that will go on my design boards of my quiz cards.

Mats being used

These are how my mats and coasters would be used at a table. I have also mixed up the coaster to the mats.

mats and board designs

The two images below were pieces to test my skills at illustrator which as you can clearly see are not very good!!! They were based on the images I drew by hand. I have decided that these are far too awful and I will be doing the mats by hand.

These are the images for my mats and my boards. I drew them all out by hand and then scanned and did a live trace in illustrator. I haven't done this before, i normally always draw and colour in my images. I really like the effect live trace has though and how you can then add colour in either illustrator or photoshop which I did. I also created the whole of the rest of the mats in photoshop which I never normally do. I liked how my work looks half hand drawn and half computer based which my work never normally looks like. I found it annoying a difficult to get to grips with all the layers and switching between them along with other things...but then suddenly it became very easy and I enjoyed using the programs.

Magazine article

I am absolutely terrible at photoshop but have been trying my absolute best to get better. Hear I have created a magazine mock up article for my mats. This image is going to go on my board and I am going to cut around the magazine so that it doesn't have the background on it.
I have made this to show that my products are promoted in magazines.
The big logo catches your attention and is recognisable on all my products.

Posters

I have been spending time creating poster that match my mats. I wanted to make this product for children to just remind them of their manners....Owning these posters gives a proof that you have and want to learn manners. It's to have up for friends to see and want themselves to prove that they have manners too.
I created these posters in photoshop. The middle circle is exactly the same as on the manners mats but the background have be altered a little.
I like my poster designs and think they work well as a collection.
