Final Musiquarium Poster and Flyer

After a talk with Chris we decided the other images with the stairs we're too busy and hard to understand. we decided to go for the original image with this background. I think it looks quite circus like...Could be an elephant standing on a ball. Im not sure that a chicken on an egg is the best example of a paradox....after research I found that a paradox is an ever ending image...but Chris is going for the "which came first"... "the chicken or the egg"..."no one will ever know" sort of question. I would have loved to have drawn an ever ending drawing as I have done in the past. I have learnt that I am the designer and I may not like what the client wants but it is not mine to decide.

PARADOX POSTERS

Aswel as the flyer there needs to be a poster too. Chris the event manager wanted it a bit different to the flyer. First I decided to rearrange the chicken and the egg and make it in to a Paradox circle with a plain background. I played around with colours and textured background.
Chris mentioned a spiral staircase as its never ending like a Paradox. I'm really pleased with the bottom three images, mainly the one with the green chicken and egg.
However I think chris wants it in black and white, which I feel wont look as good. This isn't up to me though.

Forgotten Mask

was just looking threw my folder and came across a mask I forgot about which is a shame as I spent quite a long time on this one and it is one of my favourites. Maybe I'll be able to use it for something else.

Musiquarium

I am having a meeting with chris the events manager on friday afternoon about how the flyers are going to look....I have made some concepts of how they could look, more information will have to be added.
I changed the placing of the chicken and the egg as they wouldnt fit side by side so I went for the chicken on top of the egg at different sizes.

Musiquarium

After speaking to Chris who is in charge of the event, he decided that he wanted the flyer to contain a chicken and an egg as the paradox would be what came first the chicken or the egg.

I didnt just want to draw a boring chicken and a boring egg as the place is really funky as you can see from the picture I put up of the venue before. So i decided I would work with patterns and this is what I got.

I chose the type face Aubrey as it is the same one I used for my book fair masks and since then have grown a liking for it....

I sent this to Chris and asked him if anything need change, font, size, colours but he said he liked it exactly the way it was so I didn't need to do anything else for it.

This is just for the Facebook event page and not the actual flyer, the flyer will need a lot more information about the time, place and date.

Colours

I spent quite a lot of time doing these an think they work really well. I tried doing it with some of the other masks. However I have used shading in most and it was difficult to change the colours and they all became very messy.

Musiquarium

I am creating a flyer for a night at Musiquarium Leeds which now has been decided on that it will be called "Paradox"

Not really sure what it means even tho I have heard of it, so here is some research.

par·a·dox/ˈparəˌdäks/

Noun:
  1. A statement or proposition that, despite sound (or apparently sound) reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to a conclusion that...
  2. A seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.

A paradox is a statement or concept that contains conflicting ideas. In logic, a paradox is a statement that contradicts itself; for example, the statement "I never tell the truth" is a paradox because if the statement is true (T), it must be false (F) and if it is false (F), it must be true (T). In everyday language, a paradox is a concept that seems absurd or contradictory, yet is true. In a Windows environment, for instance, it is a paradox that when a user wants to shut down their computer, it is necessary to first click "start".

Etymology:

From the Greek, "incredible, contrary to opinion or expectation"

Examples and Observations:

  • "The swiftest traveler is he that goes afoot."
    (Henry David Thoreau, Walden, 1854)

  • "If you wish to preserve your secret, wrap it up in frankness."
(Alexander Smith, "On the Writing of Essays." Dreamthorp, 1854)

  • "I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love."
    (Mother Teresa)

  • "War is peace."
    "Freedom is slavery."
    "Ignorance is strength."

going to scribble down some drawings of thing that I think are a paradox....
maybe a chicken and an egg....I also like the idea of pressing start to shut down a computer....not on a mac tho.

Manchester book fair

This is how our table look at the book fair. I was very pleased as I managed to sell 3 of my sets of masks.

book fair photos

Unfortunately I have broken my camera an its the night before the book fair, luckily my brother let me use his and after % bad photos the battery ran out and he couldn't find the charger so this is the best photos I have.
Although you can not see the paper very well I am really pleased with the appearance of my covers.
Hopefully I will make an extra pack with better paper, and I will be able to photograph my work properly.

Although these photos aren't of best quality I think the mood of the masks works with the darkness of the photos, I had a fire on at the time and the light hit the brown paper well. I think they look quite creepy.

Crit

Today was our 1st crit, I found it really useful and a good chance to see what other people are doing.

I was pleased with my feedback and in our discussion we all came up with new ideas for each other.
My discussion about my second breif which I have  just started was really helpful, how is should be for freshers ( a starters pack guide) make them in to games, a review books.

For the Roald Dahl everyone thought I should concentrate on hand drawn type as my style of drawing is really similar to Quitin Blakes and I am wanted to make something different. This talk really inspired me as I have been wanting to do some hand drawn/ craft type.

The book fair brief was ver good feed back, everyone loved my drawings, the only criticism is one that I already new and was the stock....but as everyone said "im not made out of money".
I think it would be useful to do another final book in the stock I would have wanted them all to be, this wont be as expensive as making five and be good for my portfolio.

Im really looking forward to starting my second brief of leeds....and was thinking of even more ideas after the crit, I could make a calendar, coasters, games etc. First I just need to get all the buildings drawn and then I can get making.

Feedback forms

Leeds night clubs

This is an idea of how I would produce a poster of the leeds night clubs, it would be hand drawn and in colour

The otley run pub concept

After I have drawn all the images for The Otley Run Pub crawl I will be making a concertina book and a poster....I have done a mock up of what the poster could look like, however it will be in colour and hand drawn....under each drawing will say the name of the pub.

Building

all these building are what Ive found on the internet, some of them are really bad and I couldnt find photos for leeds city college or the building college, so I really need to go out and take my own pictures

Roald Dahl Book cover design

From a brief I found over summer about re-illustrating James and the Giant Peach I have re writen my own which involves re-illustrating 5 of Roald Dahl Books. I have chosen to do.

James and the Giant Peach

The BFG

Fantastic Mr Fox

Jack and the Bean Stalk

Little Red Riding Hood

I havn't started the brief yet but have been looking at book covers that have already been done, mostly by Quitin Blake. For this brief I am not sure it is good to look at things already done as I want to come up with something on my own and not be influence by other book covers that have already been done.

After I have created the book covers I would like to make a sleeve and a window display to advertise the new book cover. I would also like to make and event where adults can bring their children along, and spend a day listening and acting like characters from the books. The would be able to dress up and then they could buy the books at the event.

Leeds

Create a variety of merchandise for graduates and students in Leeds wanting to remember their time as a student.

Consider all the building that student have been to in their time in Leeds, include, campus’s, pubs, bars, café’s etc.
Create posters, books, postcard and other merchandise that people can buy as gifts or for themselves that will remind them of Leeds.

To start with I am going to draw all the building I can in Leeds city centre and the student areas around it.
I will begin by drawing all the pubs on the Otley run.

The Otley Run: The Otley Run is a pub crawl in Leeds West Yorkshire. The route follows the A660, also known as Otley Road at the point the pub crawl commonly begins. The Otley Run is a popular social gathering for student clubs and societies from the University of Leeds, Leeds College of Art, Leeds Trinity University College and Leeds Metropolitan University  and is also a common activity for birthdays and other celebrations among graduates and city residents. Participants often wear fancy dress and coordinate their costumes to a particular theme.

Initially, the route covered only Tetley pubs and started in Otley, passing the University's main playing fields at Bodington Hall and Weetwood, and many of the University's student flats. With the closure of Weetwood, Cavendish, and Tetley Hall student residences and the opening of others beyond of city centre, the modern route has moved south of the original, usually starting at Woodies in Far Headingley instead. The chosen route may also extend beyond the University bars to city centre club nights. Inclusion of pubs away from the main road has always been regarded as optional, with followers of the extended list (known alternatively as the Headingly Mile) often starting early to allow time to visit as many venues as possible.

Depending on the route taken, the Otley Run can include over 20 drinking establishments, namely:
  1. Woodies Ale House, Far Headingley
  2. The Three Horseshoes, Far Headingley
  3. The New Inn, Far Headingley
  4. Voodoo Bar & Cocktail Lounge, Headingley
  5. Headingley Taps, Headingley
  6. The Arc, Headingley
  7. trio Bar and Grill, Headingley
  8. The Box, Headingley
  9. The Skyrack, Headingley
  10. The Original Oak, Headingley
  11. The Hyde Park, Hyde Park Corner
  12. The Library, Woodhouse Lane (formerly Feast and Firkin)
  13. The Packhorse, Woodhouse Lane
  14. The Eldon, Woodhouse Lane
  15. The Old Bar Leeds University Union
  16. The Terrace Leeds University Union
  17. The Fenton, Woodhouse Lane
  18. Strawberry Fields,(Strawbs) Woodhouse Lane
  19. The Dry Dock, Woodhouse Lane

First thing I need to do is go an take loads of photos of every place.

Here are the pubs, not my pictures

Musiquarium Leeds

I have been asked to create a flyer for Musiquarium Leeds.
At the moment the name for the night hasnt been decided on yet. But I have been doing some research on the place which is quite to my liking...

Her are some of the flyers and how it looks inside

The night I will be designing for will be the monday night student night, the flyer above shows where the night will go.

The inside of the place looks amazing, and although I havnt been given a brief yet I am already planning on doing something really colourful and bright.

stickers to seel packet

At the moment I have printed off all my A3 masks on to card, I have yet to print off the instructions which I have now decided to do on A4 as it would cost me too much to print any bigger.
I have decided I am going to wrap up all the cards together in brown paper like a present.
I have designed some stickers to stick on the front and to seal the back of the paper

This is what they will look like.

short brief for CRUK

over the summer I did some free design work for cancer research, its not really what I do as I am more illustration based, I learnt a lot though and I quite enjoyed it.
Last week they got in contact with me again asking me to do a very small brief which I agreed to do.
Here is what I was asked to do...

it didnt take me long and it was nice to help out. I gave her a few options to choose from and based them all on the guidelines I was given

expensive!!!!

Just went down to the print rooms and asked if i could print of 17 A3 pages 5 times each...turns out that this would cost me around £120. I'm afraid I dont have this much money to spare, even if I printed it in the print rooms on my own paper it would still cost around £45. So I have decided I am going to buy my own paper and print from the mac suits. I realised this isn't a problem anyways as all my work is in Black and white so it  shouldn't make a difference to the quality.

Instructions and characters

Ive spent a bit of time trying to be really imaginative and fun, making up characters and tasks for people to do when wearing the masks I have drawn,  I'm pretty embarrassed about what I've writen as some of it is extremely random. However it was my idea to have random task to do and funny characteristics. So hopefully people will enjoy what I ave written.

DESIGN FOR PRINT (workshop 1)

Things we want to learn
Preflighting...everything will be okay when it goes through to print
Using colour pallets

new document
columns, margins, Bleeds and slugs give you extra guidelines to assist you with your layout.
Bleeds- accommodate in any inaccuracy of trimming.
Always include a bleed margin...3mm
Slug-area outside the trimmed edge for printers marks
Facing Pages...is it a double page spread or not. (is it going to be a book?)

To change document...go to layout menu...can change number of pages and columns and margins

everything must be contained by  frame, things need to be considered when using files form:

Photoshop
1. actual size
2. colour-right colour mode, CMYK,monotone/ duotone, greyscale
3. Tiff, psd, pdf, jpeg, png, gif files may all be used for print. to import to  Indesign you would choose tiff or psd
4. 300dpi must be used
if you want something to be twice as big when you scan it, you make the resolution twice as big.\
5. Never copy and Paste

Illustrator
1. Do not need to scale
2. Have to work in CMYK
3. The file format I choose is Ai
4. You can copy and paste
5. do not need a resolution

6. When importing to indesign you have an option to click "show import files"
click the transparent background option

placing an images, look in the links pallet.
the images in the link pallet has a number next to it, if you had 60 pages and didn't know where your image was you could open the links and click on the number, this will take you to the image

File>package...will package everything together in to one folder.
You can edit your images on photoshop and it will update automatically in indesign
right click>edit original

on images in user work, right click>change info>open with photoshop> change all
shortcut...hold alt key and double click

You should not enlarge an image after you have placed it on indesign as you will change the resolution and making it pixelated.
You should also avoid making the image smaller even tho you would not make it pixelated.

To make a pdf in indesign file. adobe pdf presets. press quality print
