Image evaluation

Taking the image module has been a very useful experience. Throughout the weeks I have learnt image as practice and what makes an image. The main skill I have learnt and enjoyed is "type as image" and I have been  able to understand how to transform type in to illustration while still being legible. I did this in the brief I chose on my own and made a type face of beards, I wanted to keep it simple and only chose to add eyes, adding a nose and mouth made it harder to see that it was a letter. I then made t-shirt transfers from theses letters, packaged them and called it "A Type of Beard". Unfortunately when getting my alphabet printed I  forgot that I needed to print the letters backwards so that when they got transferred they would be the right way, I would have printed them again but it was expensive.
I think this module has forced me to leave my comfort zone and try new methods and experiment more which has increased my range of skills and confidence in other areas. The length of the briefs were all very short, ranging between one and two weeks, this made you think of an idea and go with it. I think this was a good way or working, I kept thinking I wouldn't have any time to make good work but instead I created a lot of good work in a quick time. However because of the short amount of time and my concentration focusing on getting the work done I found it hard to research in depth.

1. APPLICATIONS
   For cotton or mix-cotton fabrics. White or light coloured. Possible applications: t-shirts, bags, caps, sweat-shirts, etc.

2. TRANSFERRING
   Male sure that any steam options on your iron are turned off. Make sure that the temperature of the iron is at the maximum for the transfer.  Stretch out the fabric without creases onto a hard, flat surface and place the image to be transferred on to the fabric (with the grid facing you). Iron gently, but firmly exerting an even pressure to transfer your image, ensuring that  the entire surface is uniformly hot. The necessary time can go up to several minutes depending on the temperature or your iron and on the size of the image to be transferred.

3. Washing and Maintenance
   Do not was decorated fabric for 24hours after the transfer. Wash the fabric inside out at 40c maximum. Do not use detergent with bleaching agents. Leave to dry at room temperature: do not use an electric dryer. Do not dry clean (with chemical solvents).

Caution: Please ensure that any new material is washed before applying transfer.

I have made 5 pages that will go in the iron on package. They are on iron on paper and there will be instructions on how to cut them out, arrange them and iron on to tops.

Letters

For image I am going to create a package of iron me ons and using an old brief of type as image I am going  to create an alphabet where each letter is an image. I have thought of many themes, seaweed, sea creatures, peacock feather, chips, worms, snakes, but I have settled on beards. There isnt much reasoning behind this other than I find them funny and I love drawing hair, I find it therapeutic.

I need to decide on what I would like to do for a typeface. Here are a list of thinks I would quite like to do:

• Trees
• fruit
• houses
• mushrooms
• birds
• sweets
• clocks
• seacreatures

I also want to base these typefaces on an existing typeface which I can manipulate.

This year we got to enter the book fair again and was part of the image module, I really enjoyed last years book fair but didn't think I'd be able to do as well or create better drawing than I did last year. We were given four words, Colour, typeface, sound, shape. 

I really enjoys drawing building and my 1st idea was drawing buildings in Leeds, however I have already done this before and a lot of building aren't that interesting. So I found a book with different homes around the world and found some really unique and interesting ones. Below is the packaging I made and the images of house I put inside.

Eye chart

This week we were given a random word from the randomiser. With this word we were to create an a2 eye chart that worked from 12feet away. I was given the word snare drum. I decided to hand draw all my drums and make them look old fashioned. My original eye chart was on canvas paper that I have dyed with teabags for a worn out old look. The images I drew on ended up being wonky and there wernt enough lines on the chart and wasn't recognisable as an eye chart, I decided to scan in my images and created the images below.

2d to 3d to 2d

This week in image was all very fun...we were looking at turning 2d images in to 3d and then back in to 3d. We were asked to write down 4 words, a place, an object, a colour and a person.

This was then taken from us and passed to someone else as we got another one handed to us. With theses 4 words we had to quickly draw a situation with them all in it. Once again this was passed along and another one was handed to you.

With this picture we then had to re-create the picture in 3d using as many found objects as possible.If it was to hard to get an object or make something else look like an object we were allowed to create cardboard cut outs. My words were orange, iceberg, business man and the moon.

The images above are my final design. I used a lightbulb as the moon, ice cubes, and a man who is orange.

From my feed back everyone liked the image and thought it was fun which is what the brief was about. Things I could improve on:

• the place?why a street? I originally wanted to do it in the middle of the road and use the pavement as the sea, this was too difficult to take a picture and hold the lightbulb without my hand being in the image. So I moved my work to the side where I could hang my lightbulb.
• making the man look more like a business man
• use the colour orange more.

image feedback/evaluation

After showing my 3 A1 posters to a group i received some useful criticism and compliments.

Firstly they said that my work was affective as they didn't even want to look at the "infection" poster, which show how my typeface works. However they said that the background didn't really go with the work and I should think about changing it to something that is not white.

The batteries was the most liked but quality of line was poor in some places and i should think about scanning my work it and touching it up on other programs, the positioning was another point raise and i should try and play the word on a different part of the page.

The last piece was "back of there heads" this was my least favourite piece but received good and bad criticisms, the main issue raised was that a darker like maybe should have been used and more detail in the hair.
