SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE

Remembering what it was like starting my first week of college, how I felt and what emotions I experienced:
  • How do i cook?
  • I cant remember their names!
  • Fred time?
  • missing home and friends
  • awkward
  • Am i good enough for this course
  • They can all use Photoshop
  • I don't know how to get anywhere!
  • Wheres my money gone?
idea one

Concept
Walking in circles!
getting lost and not knowing where you are is a scary and a big problem for new students to a new city

Ideas
Poster map of Leeds/college/town center
pocket map
website

Research
own encounters, Leeds council guides, google maps, other peoples experiences

Resolution
a survival kit for being stuck on a desert island or lost in a jungle
make Leeds in to an Island and help new students to find their way around.

idea two

Concept
Getting from point "A" to point "B"...and on weekends point "C"

Ideas
quickest way to travel to places
how many steps it takes to get somewhere and how many minutes

student accommodation to college.
train station to college
this will make sure that students will arrive on time for their lessons.

Research
walking and counting steps and time.

What is the problem I intend to solve?
how to find places in Leeds and where to go as a student.

Who needs to know?
New students who don't know their way around Leeds as it is a new city for them

What do they need to know?
the time it takes to get to places an a rough idea of where places are

why do they need to know it?
for time management and getting to know the city around them

What will they respond too?
a poster/map of Leeds and journey routes with instructions and time taken on

What research is required?
timing journeys and finding the quickest route with understandable instructions.

Crit feed back

Strong useful idea, as new student do not know their way around and need to know how long their journeys will take for time management. Desert Island approach adds fun to the project as maps can be dull and boring.

For my project I have decided to design one large map of Leeds in a desert Island style.
It will have the main building drawn how they look and placed roughly in the correct position on my map. I am then going to draw the rest of Leeds as an Island as I feel that is what it will be for a new student who has never lived in Leeds before.

COMMUNICATION IS A VIRUS- final piece

The two images below show the front and back of my groups business cards which can fit in to a purse or wallet.

The image below is the inside of out mailshot flyer. This one is for Birthdays and
has a list of gift ideas. At the bottom it directs you to a website to learn how to make these gifts.

Below is the front of our mailshot flyer. It works by folding it in two places so that when flat the top image and the bottom image meet and become one image.

COMMUNICATION IS A VIRUS

A gift is a thought from the heart

My group is planning on designing a website and a mail shot.

What will it consist of?

A list of gift idea which can be handmade or don’t involve a lot of money to be spent.

Our group and feedback shows that a present which has been had made or is personal shows more love than something that has been quickly bought without much thought.

Website- we are producing a website that will give people ideas for:

  • Birthdays
  • Christmas
  • Mother’s day
  • Father’s day
  • Valentine’s day
  • Weddings
  • Easter
  • Anniversaries

Our plan is to get people to go on this website, click on their desired topic and find ideas for gifts that they can make and give.

Here are the ideas we came up with for birthdays

Birthdays:

  • A scrapbook
  • A day trip out
  • A picnic in the park
  • Friendship bracelet
  • Handpicked flowers
  • Handmade photo frame
  • A mix tape
  • Cakes and buns
  • Sock puppet and other handmade toys
  • Handmade card and wrapping
  • A tea party with friends
  • A tie dye T-shirt

Mailshots

To get people to hear about our website we are planning ob making a mail shot to send out to families. We will also be handing them out in shopping areas to get people to think twice. We will send these mail shots out before events, such as sending the mail shot out before Christmas shopping begins.

Giving out these we are hoping to get people to think twice and to realise that they don’t have to spend a fortune to show that they care.

Feed back from Crit

Our crit with another group showed to be very useful

They thought the idea was strong and useful, especially like how it saves money. They believed we were solving the problem of “getting people to give more”

The problem that arose was the target audience as it is too broad. Comments were made about adult looking childish sending each other a friendship bracelet. Also handing it out to shoppers isn’t a very good idea, as if they have gone out to shop they most likely won’t change their minds as it would have been a waste of time coming.

We have decided to target young children who do not make money from the ages of 6-11. The flyer will be handed out in school and also sent to their homes as parents might like to help the children make their present. Parents also love to keep hold and treasure the things their children make when they are young and this might encourage the parents to let the children make their gifts.

My task in the group

At the beginning of the brief we were asked to write down our skills and what skills in others we are looking for. I wrote down that my strongest skill was illustration and that I am looking for a partner good with computers and Photoshop.

So my job in the group is to draw all the illustrations for the flyer and the website and my partners will be in charge of web design and putting my illustrations together with type and making sure the layout is correct.

Here are my illustrations

Our idea from the statement "Getting people to give more"

As a group of three we decided that we wanted to work with the statement above.
We decided that giving isn't about spending loads of money. We are planning on making and doing a graphic response to getting people to give more without spending too much money.
we first thought and asked questions to friends "where do you get present to give to people?"
results:
  • shops
  • Internet shopping
  • catalogues
  • markets
  • magazines
These all involve buying and spending money.

Our plan is to get people to give more by making their presents and our job will be to encourage and give ideas on how to do this.

what will you intend to say?
A gift is a thought from the heart.

How will you intend to say it?
A mail shot with present ideas for birthdays, Christmas, mothers day etc.

What language will be appropriate?
Gentile and friendly approach with text and image both informing.

What are you aiming to achieve?
We are wanting people to realise that giving a gift isn't about how much money you spend its about showing your love, and there are ways that show how much you care about someone without spending a fortune.
